Pleasing the Master

Pleasing the Master

In a master-servant relationship, the major preoccupation of the latter should be how to please the former. Similarly, the Christian relationship with God is premised on pleasing Him. However, the one-million-dollar question is ‘how can a servant please his/her master?’ The simple answer is knowing the master’s will and doing it. Jesus Christ remarked that the servant who knows his master’s will but does not do it will receive greater punishment. “And that servant who knew his master’s will, and did nor prepare himself or do according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes” (Luke 12:47). In this piece, I will be sharing three keys to doing God’s will.

First is obedience. God delights more in obeying His voice than in making offerings or sacrifices to Him. “… Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed than the fat of rams.” (1Samuel 15:22). Obedience simply refers to doing exactly and completely what God wants. You please God when you do according to instructions of His Spirit, the scriptures or godly directives by His servants. If you really trust God, then you will obey Him! Second is submission. This means absolute surrenderness to the will of God. Abraham pleased God by submitting to God’s will, when he was instructed to sacrifice his only child, Isaac. Submitting to God does not mean that you don’t have your own will or opinion, it only means you prioritize His will. For instance, Abraham could have discarded God’s instruction on the premise that Isaac was his only child. Do you place your desire or will above that of God? Submission or humility is a potent weapon to fight the devil! “Therefore, submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7). Conversely, the reverse is the case for the proud as the fellow is divinely resisted. “… God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” (1Peter 5:5). Third is sanctification. God is too holy to be pleased with any form of iniquity or unrighteousness. Believers must constantly sanctify themselves by the blood of Jesus Christ and purify their hearts with the word of God. Apostle Paul wrote in 2Timothy 2:21 that, “Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from the latter, he will be a vessel for honour, sanctified and useful for the Master, prepared for every good work.”

Finally, you cannot serve two masters! Which master do you serve? Today, I implore you to serve and please the living God; by accepting the Lordship of His Son, Jesus Christ. May the Lord bless you and be gracious unto you. PEACE
