The wisest and richest king who ever lived on earth asked a rhetorical question in Proverbs 31:10- *“Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies”* In the above scripture, Solomon did not make a mistake by using the word ‘wife’ instead of ‘woman’; he was intentional in his choice of words. A wife belongs to a particular husband while ‘woman’ is the general nomenclature for any female of marriageable age. The worth of a virtuous wife is even incomparable to ruby, a precious stone of inestimable value.
The word virtuous is the adjective form of virtue, and it is a quality showing moral standards. The Bible, in Proverbs 31, defines a virtuous wife as one who leads her home with integrity, discipline, diligence, and lots more. All the virtues she is endowed with are aimed at making her husband’s life better, teaching her children, and serving God. *“The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain”* (Proverbs 31:11). Suffice to say that the worth of a virtuous wife is far above rubies because she is trustworthy. It is pertinent to note that trustworthiness is pivotal to any enduring relationship, especially, marriage. A lot of marriages and homes are suffering today due to lack of trust between husband and wife. The attendant suspicion leads to rancour, conflict and gradual disintegration of love in marriage. In fact, heartache will be far from the man who is fortunate to marry a virtuous woman as wife. Why does the heart of the husband of a virtuous wife trust in her? The simple and straightforward answer is virtue! Are you qualified to be called a virtuous wife, woman or lady? Let us take a cursory look at the characteristics of a virtuous wife in the Bible. She is godly, prayerful, wise, faithful to God, caring about the health and welfare of her family. She is humble, loving, kind, submissive, supportive, sensitive, and resourceful. In addition, she is industrious, enterprising, giving, responsible, and dresses decently as the image maker of her home. Abigail is a copious example of a virtuous wife who was sensitive and responsive to redeem the folly of her husband, Nabal, with gifts. *“The name of the man was Nabal and the name of his wife Abigail, and she was a woman of good understanding and beautiful appearance; but the man was harsh and evil in his doings.”* (1Samuel 25:3).
Beloved, every home is purposed to establish and radiate the beauty and glory of God on earth. The husband and wife must dwell together in love and create a home environment full of the aura of God’s glory. May we not fail God in our responsibilities. *Happy Cedar Women Convention 2022!*
